Sediment erodibility in the Changjiang (Yangtze) subaqueous delta: spatial–temporal distribution and sedimentary significance

چکیده
Abstract Delta evolution in the context of no sediment discharge has become a global concern, and an accretion-to-erosion conversion is occurring Yangtze estuary. This could threaten Changjiang subaqueous delta development. Sediment erodibility important indicator vulnerability. However, present future remains unclear. In this study, 37 short cores were collected from delta, critical shear stress was measured using cohesive strength meter (CSM) compared with estimates based on empirical Shields diagram. The analyzed by comparing bed simulated numerical model (i.e., FVCOM), activity introduced to discuss geomorphological change delta. CSM-derived significantly higher than that derived formula, but it better shows sediment. annual surface ranges 5% 30% CSM, indicating low erodibility. Moreover, region increases as water depth increases, opposite trend. Therefore, lower shallow area, accretion-erosion or continued vertical erosion under starvation coming decades. These findings can provide suggestions for assessment management large river deltas decreasing discharge.

Reconstruction of sediment flux from the Changjiang (Yangtze River) to the sea since the 1860s
r a 200 .005 dress: Ke , China. ail.ouc.e Summary The Changjiang (Yangtze River) has been effectively gauged since the 1950s and demonstrates the transformation of a river system due to intensified human activities in its drainage basin over the past 50 yr. However, the 50-yr measurements of water and sediment are inadequate to show the long-term trend of sediment flux from the river to the sea...
متن کاملDetection of the Three Gorges Dam influence on the Changjiang (Yangtze River) submerged delta
While most large river-deltas in the world are facing the risk of subsidence and erosion in the Anthropocene, it is suspected that the Changjiang submerged delta (CSD) could be subjected to the impacts of the world's largest dam, the Three Gorges Dam (TGD). Here we firstly indicate that the CSD went through high accumulation (1958-1978); slight accumulation (1978-1997), slight erosion (1997-200...

A long-term goal of our sediment transport and deposition investigations is to link sediment-transport processes to the formation and preservation of event beds in sediment deposits. The general aim of this project is to investigate how forcing processes affect the sediment-transport dynamics that act to effect the delivery and retention of fine-grained sediment through tidal rivers and in shal...
متن کاملSedimentation in the Three Gorges Dam and the future trend of Changjiang (Yangtze River) sediment flux to the sea
The Three Gorges Dam (TGD) on the upper Changjiang (Yangtze River), China, disrupts the continuity of Changjiang sediment delivery to downstream and coastal areas. In this study, which was based on 54 years of annual water and sediment data from the mainstream and major tributaries of Changjiang, sediment deposition induced by the TGD in 2003–2008 was quantified. Furthermore, we determined the ...
متن کاملNew evidence of Yangtze delta recession after closing of the Three Gorges Dam
Many deltas are likely undergoing net erosion because of rapid decreases in riverine sediment supply and rising global sea levels. However, detecting erosion in subaqueous deltas is usually difficult because of the lack of bathymetric data. In this study, by comparing bathymetric data between 1981 and 2012 and surficial sediment grain sizes from the Yangtze subaqueous delta front over the last ...
